UMC provides offshore rig fastening
August 2010
UMC International, providers of underwater repairs and maintenance recently turned their talents to assist the offshore market with some underwater welding.

Midwater semi-submersible rig, Pride Venezuela had been in Dry Docks World Dubai completing a repair and maintenance programme before its mobilisation for offshore drilling services in Brazil.

Simon Doran, General Manager of UMC International in Dubai said, “Although we had to provide a fully qualified, Class approved, underwater welding diver, the job was not overly hard to organise but patience was required to be able to fulfil the underwater welding requirements around the daily marine manoeuvres of the busy Dry Docks World Dubai facility, however it is indicative of the inroads we are making into securing more and more contracts on offshore infrastructure and civil engineering work.”
He continued, “The rig stopper that we had to weld underwater was a temporary sea fastening guide for positioning purposes whilst the rig was being transported to Brazil.”

The Pride Venezuela is one of six midwater semi-submersibles in the Pride International fleet. The rig is a conventionally moored unit, and is capable of operating in water depths of up to 1,500 feet.
